The Sapio Group is the leading Italian producer and supplier of industrial and medical gases and homecare and integrated support services. Through an extensive network of production and commercial sites, and subsidiaries, the Group also operates in France, Germany, Spain, Slovenia and Turkey.

INDUSTRY

Founded in 1922, Sapio has produced, developed and distributed gases, technologies, applications and services for every productive sectors, from food to the environment and energy, from the chemical and pharmaceutical to the electronic, from the mechanical and metallurgic to glass and cement.

HEALTH

For the health sector Sapio not only supplies gases and technologies to hospitals but also supports patients in their homes, with the medical devices and medicines necessary for their therapies. This ensures a continuity in the cure through specialised healthcare personnel to provide homecare services for frail patients, complex cases or patients with special needs.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF BUSINESS

  • 1922

    SAPIO was founded in Monza on 17th November 1922.

  • 1923

    On 1 January, the production of oxygen and hydrogen from electrolysis begins.

  • 1930-1950

    After the first systems for the production of gaseous oxygen, the product switches to the liquid state with the “cryogenic revolution”.

  • 1950-1970

    In these years the so-called “cryogenic revolution” takes place, with the transition from a gaseous product, in cylinders, to liquid. These years also see the acquisition of production plants in Mantua, Marghera, Ferrara, Priolo and Porto Torres

  • 1989

    Sapio Life is founded to respond to the specific requirements of the nascent homecare market.

  • 1990

    Air Products and Chemicals Inc., an American multinational in the technical gas sector, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, enters the company with a 49% stake. In this period the Group evolves in the hospital healthcare market, offering services and new solutions over and above the simple supply of medical gases.

  • 1998

    In Germany Sapio acquires Vitamed Gmbh, which operates in the healthcare sector.

  • 1999

    The second great challenge: the NMR Award was introduced. In 2002, this became the Sapio Award for Italian Research and later the Sapio Award for Research and Innovation.

  • 2000

    Sapio pioneers technologies for sustainable mobility solutions: the project for the first hydrogen-fuelled bus in Italy begins.

  • 2003

    BioRep is set up, a biobank capable of providing storage services to public and private research institutes, guaranteeing the highest levels of quality and safety.

  • 2004

    Life Cure, a company specialised in integrated homecare services is founded.

  • 2006

    Sistemi Iperbarici is founded to focus on designing, constructing and maintaining hyperbaric chambers and systems. A takeover in Slovenia leads to the birth of Sapio Plini.

  • 2009

    2009 Sapio acquires the CER Group

  • 2012

    Establishment of Sapio Life Turkey.

  • 2013

    Elite Certification

  • 2014

    Sapio takes over the French company Synapse Santé S.a.s. which operates in the home health care sector.

  • 2015

    Sapio invests in businesses related to its own, through the acquisition of Eurotre and Argon, a company producing and marketing non-refillable pressure vessels for compressed and liquefied gases, and the health information and services portal Pazienti.it.

  • 2018

    Alberto Dossi is elected president of H2IT – Italian Association of Hydrogen and Combustion Cells.

  • 2019

    Sapio acquires three companies in the healthcare sector: Medica Group, in Italy, GTI Medicare in Germany and Contse (now Sapio Life S.A.U) in Spain.

  • 2020

    Sapio launches the “Energy Transition and Sustainability” division and joins the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance Eurotre S.r.l. opens its headquarters in the United States, Eurotre Inc., the first company of the Group to expand overseas At the height of the pandemic, Sapio completes the important takeover of Homeperf, a French group operating in home care.

The role of the Sapio Group, like the role of all companies that invest in their development and in the development of the entire collective, is being the hotbed of new technologies and new ideas, to improve the quality of life of the people and the environment we live in. It’s an objective that we share within the company. Our employees are constantly stimulated towards new ways of operating, new products and services, that can render the company more efficient and provide the best service for the customers and patients.

In Sapio we believe that innovating means responding to market needs that have not been met yet. Achieving this helps maintain the company relevant, contributing to reaching the strategic objectives that have been set, as well as generating value for the company and its employees, as well as for customers and the community that we operate in. In the Sapio Group everyone can become an entrepreneur, create a start-up and be an innovator, by pooling their uniqueness within cross-functional teams that prize diversity as an advantage. In 2017 Sapio created an Innovation Team, guided by a Chief Innovation Officer. The Innovation Team coordinates the innovation activities inherent to the Industry and Healthcare business units and reports regularly to the Innovation Board, formed by certain members of the Board of Directors, with the decisional powers to launch experimental products and services, and subsequent pilot schemes, on the market.

SAPIOTHON: HOW TO INNOVATE A GROUP WITH ALMOST 100 YEARS

Sapiothon is an internal “hackathon” open to all employees of the Sapio Group, aimed at the engagement and promotion of innovation. The first Sapiothon, launched in 2018, concluded with the launch of SmarTAG (2019 Smau Innovation Prize) . This predictive reordering system is based on the consumption history and the stock on hand of industrial gas tanks.

In the second half of 2020, despite the medical emergency, the Sapio Group has continued to promote the importance of innovation. The new edition of Sapiothon was therefore planned and launched fully online, with the support of our partner Cariplo Factory. It marked the start of a coaching course of a few months for 50 employees, divided in 10 teams focused on issues affecting three specific areas of strategic interest for the company: (1) business-to-consumer (“B2C”) for the Healthcare division, (2) Industry: go-to-market and processes, (3) Post-Covid: the new normal.

THE HORIZON PROJECT

Horizon is the Sapio Group project that rewrites the relations between company, employees and the environment.

The need for remote working solutions, triggered by the Covid-19 emergency, has clearly revealed a new horizon that can shape the way we work. It has been a great chance that the Sapio Group has seized, transforming the exceptional aspect of the period into a new opportunity for growth and change for the future.

Greater efficiency, greater safety, greater respect for the resources thanks to increasingly linear processes and simplified operations, able to optimise both the quality of the work and the quality of life, is a scenario where everyone is a winner: people, the environment and the company.

REMOTE WORKING, QUALITY OF LIFE.

Remote working is a way of rethinking the way we work so that we go to the office only when it’s necessary. Working from home reduces pollution, it’s safer for people, allows for more free time and is more efficient for the company.
Taking into account the type of job, the family and personal situation as well as the need for social relations and sharing with colleagues, working from home can be an optimal solution that allows for flexibility, and a new approach to control and monitoring efficiency based on objectives and results rather than solely on number of hours worked.
Another advantage is the reduction in commuting time, on average of 230 hours a year, about 10 days, per person, with a consequent drop in emissions and a saving of over 2 million kg of CO2, the quantity absorbed by a forest of 350,000 trees

LESS PRINTING. LESS PAPER.

Paper has been eliminated as much as possible in all company departments. From the daily operations of the individual employee, right up to the management level there has been a significant shift to digital tools.
The target is to achieve a reduction of 1 million prints per year.

VALORISATION OF HUMAN RESOURCES

By minimising transport costs the company can save about 2 million Euro per year but, most importantly, it improves efficiency and the involvement and loyalty of employees towards the company. In a calm and dynamic professional environment people work better and feel more responsible and satisfied.
